Biographical / Historical note:Margaret Anderson (1886-1973), writer and editor. Anderson was the founder and editor of the Little Review and author of several books, including My Thirty Years' War; The Fiery Fountains; The Strange Necessity; and The Unknowable Gurdjieff.
-
Summary:The Elizabeth Jenks Clark Collection of Margaret Anderson contains correspondence, writings, photographs, sound recordings, and other papers. The material documents Anderson's life, work as editor of the Little Review and author, and romantic relationships with many noted writers, poets, artists, photographers and performers of the twentieth century, in particular her close friendship with co-editor and writer Jane Heap, writer Solita Solano and sculptor Elizabeth Jenks Clark. The bulk of the papers documents her personal and professional life after the Little Review ceased publication, including her personal life in France and her friendship and studies with George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff. A portion of the papers documents publishing the Little Review and provides context to Anderson's role as founder and editor of the magazine.
Correspondence, writings and photographs comprise the bulk of the papers. Correspondence documents her close friendships, lesbian relationships and professional pursuits. Photographs include portraits that appeared in the Little Review and snapshots of friends and family. The papers also contain writings of others, including Solita Solano and Georgette Leblanc, and recorded interviews with Anderson's family and friends. Personal papers and Mathilda Hill's research material make up the smallest portion of the papers.
