    • Local Notes:
BEIN 2011 +190: Imperfect: dust jacket mutilated but with no loss of text.
    • Notes:
Text is Passover seder song. Each of the 10 leaves lettered aleph-yod reproduces and illustrates one of the song's 10 lines. Two preliminary leaves comprise illustrated title and leaf with dedication to "Polien" (perhaps Polina Chentova; see El Lissitzky 1890-1941 catalogue). Dedication dated Feb. 6, 1919, at Pushcha-Vodit︠s︡a.
Dust jacket lithographed on both sides. Inner surface has full text of song (with repeats) followed by Yiddish title "Das Tsigele," together with abstract, geometrical design in pink and black that has been interpreted as legs of a striding figure. Outer surface has purple ground on which appear title, publisher's mark incorporating image of father and kid with price of 10 rubles, and roundel containing the words "Kultur-Lige" and images of son, cat, and father holding candle.
Lissitzky's earliest preliminary drawings for the illustrations are contained in a book of watercolors from 1917 now in the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow. A later set of gouaches now in the Tel Aviv Museum is very close to the published form.
      From an edition of 75.
A second version was published in Warsaw (1923) in an ed. of 1000. It is smaller in format (18.4 x 17.7 cm.), has no dust jacket, and apart from the cover is in black and white.
